When to go
The best time to visit Komodo
Calmer dry-season seas beat the wet-season swell — plus manta timing.
Komodo through the year
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Dry (Apr–Dec) | Calmer seas, reliable trips — the main window |
| Peak (Jun–Aug) | Best conditions but busiest and priciest |
| Wet (Jan–Mar) | Rougher seas, more disruption, fewer crowds |
| Mantas | Possible year-round; varies by season and site |
Aim for the dry season
The dry season, running roughly April to December, is the best time to visit Komodo. Calmer seas make the boat trips smoother and the snorkelling clearer, and conditions are generally more reliable for reaching the islands. Since every part of a Komodo visit depends on being out on the water, the sea state matters enormously — and the dry months are when it's most cooperative.
The peak months
The heart of the dry season, around June to August, brings the best conditions but also the biggest crowds and highest prices, as it coincides with the international travel peak. If you visit then, book your tours and flights to Labuan Bajo well ahead. The trade-off is prime weather and calm seas in exchange for more company at the popular spots.
The wet season
From roughly January to March the wet season brings rougher seas, more rain and a greater chance of trips being disrupted or cancelled for safety. It's quieter and can be cheaper, and the islands are greener, but the unpredictable conditions make it a gamble for a trip that hinges on boats. Most visitors sensibly avoid the wettest months if they can.
Timing the manta rays
Swimming with manta rays is a highlight for many, and while mantas can be seen year-round at Manta Point, their presence varies with the season and conditions. If the manta encounter is a priority for you, it's worth checking the best timing with operators when you book, rather than assuming it's guaranteed on any given day.
Putting the timing together
For most visitors the formula is simple: come in the dry season for calm seas and reliable tours, book ahead if you're travelling in the peak months, and check manta timing if that encounter matters to you. Get the season right and Komodo's islands, dragons and waters are at their spectacular best.
